Step 1: Students get wordsearch worksheets to introduce and reinforce key vocabulary. They work in pairs to find the words and look up their meaning in a dictionary. Step 2: Students decide whether they want to participate in the Spelling Bee competition as competitiors or organisers. Organisers have to write down all the words from the worksheets on slips of papers. Half of the organizing group writes the English words and the other half their Croatian equivalents. Students note down any new words in their notebooks.  Competitors make a list of words from the worksheets into their notebooks in alphabetical order and translating them. Step 3: The competition can be performed either in teams pairs or individual students. It depends on the size of the class and the number of competitors. I did it in groups of three in one class and in pairs in the other class. Teams can assign themselves names. Round 1: Organisers take turns to draw a slip of paper from the pile of words in English read it to the first team/pair who have 10 seconds to consult each other on the spelling. One student from the team 1 spells the word for one point and translates the word for an extra point. Organizors decide whether the spelling/translation was correct looking at their notes in the notebooks. One student writes the points on the board. Then another student organizor picks a slip of paper and team 2 answers until all the teams answer. Round 2: Now the organisers draw from the pile of words written in Croatian. Teams translate the word in English for one point and spell it for an extra point. Round 3: Competitors have to explain the English word in English and use it in a sentence. The points on the board are added up to announce the winners. Organizors write the names on the diploma for those who won 1st 2nd or 3rd place. Diploma certificates are prepared and printed out beforehand by teacher and possibly some awards like English readers or pens and notepads etc. Everyone poses for a joint photo and next lesson a pinboard can be prepared.
