Opis materijala
fieldwork and classroom work:
Students work in small groups to investigate selected trees in their local environment. They identify tree species and measure tree height using three different methods: the GLOBE Observer app, the pencil method and the mirror method. They also measure tree circumference at breast height and use the collected data to calculate tree diameter, estimate tree age, above-ground biomass, stored carbon and the amount of CO₂ absorbed by the tree.
The students compare the results obtained using different measurement methods, analyse possible sources of measurement error, create graphs showing the relationship between tree size, age and carbon storage, and discuss the role of trees in the carbon cycle. The activity concludes with the creation of a digital poster presenting their results and conclusions.
Znanja koja će učenici steći
• identify selected tree species using a digital plant identification application; • measure tree height using different field methods and compare the obtained results; • measure tree circumference at breast height and calculate tree diameter (DBH); • estimate tree age using the provided calculation method; • calculate above-ground biomass, dry biomass, stored carbon and the amount of CO₂ absorbed by a tree using collected field data; • explain the role of photosynthesis and trees in the carbon cycle; • describe the transformation and flow of energy through an ecosystem; • represent photosynthesis using a balanced chemical equation and identify the associated energy transformation; • analyse relationships between tree size, age, carbon storage and CO₂ absorption; • construct and interpret graphs based on collected and calculated data; • identify possible sources of measurement error and evaluate differences between measurement methods; interpret scientific data
