This project-based learning activity combines local plant observation with participation in the Notes from Nature citizen science project. Students document plant species in their environment and help digitize historical herbarium records by transcribing scientific data. The material develops scientific, observational and digital skills while promoting biodiversity awareness, environmental literacy and active participation in authentic scientific research.

Through this citizen science project, students will develop an understanding of plant biodiversity, species distribution and the role of herbarium collections in scientific research. They will learn how scientists document and study plants over time, while strengthening observation, documentation and data management skills. Students will contribute to real scientific datasets by transcribing herbarium records and recording local plant observations. The project develops digital literacy, scientific inquiry and critical thinking, while promoting environmental awareness and an understanding of how climate change and human activities influence ecosystems. It also fosters collaboration, communication and intercultural learning through shared exploration of plant diversity in different regions of the world.
