This lesson introduces students to the concept of New Year's resolutions and encourages them to reflect on personal goals for the coming year. Through movement, visual support, guided grammar practice, and pair interaction, students learn and use vocabulary related to daily routines, healthy habits, school, and leisure activities. The lesson focuses on the future form going to, enabling students to express simple plans and intentions. As a final product, students create a Resolution Card or Mini Poster that combines a written resolution with a visual element.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand the concept of New Year's resolutions and identify common resolutions related to health, education, and personal development. They will use the structure I'm going to... to talk about future plans, express two or three personal resolutions orally and in writing, and participate in simple conversations about their goals for the new year.

Introduction: Think–Move–Choose

The lesson begins with a movement activity called Think–Move–Choose. Students see signs representing different areas of life, such as sport, school, health, and free time, displayed around the classroom. They move to the area they would most like to improve in the coming year and share a word or short phrase related to their choice. This activity introduces the topic and encourages participation from all students.

Vocabulary

Students brainstorm common New Year's resolutions such as eat healthy food, study more, learn English, exercise more, save money, and sleep more. The new vocabulary is practised through repetition and short oral exercises to help students become familiar with the target language.

Grammar - "going to"

Next, students focus on the grammar structure going to. They examine example sentences and identify the target structure used for future plans and intentions. Through guided practice, students complete sentence prompts and create their own examples using the new grammar pattern.

Speaking

Students write two or three personal resolutions using I'm going to... and then interview a partner about their plans for the coming year. Stronger students may also explain their choices by adding a reason using because.

Designing a Resolution Card

Students create a Resolution Card or Mini Poster. They write the title My New Year's Resolution and include one or two sentences describing their future plans. They also add a drawing, symbol, or simple visual that represents their resolution. Students may display their work in a gallery walk or briefly present it to their classmates.

Formative Assessment

At the end of the lesson, students complete an exit ticket by writing one sentence using I'm going to... to demonstrate their understanding of the target grammar and vocabulary.
