This is a learning scenario for ELD. Students create their interactive materials. The materials in this learning scenario can also be ready-made materials for practicing food-related English language vocabulary (British and American English).

To use of figurative language and idioms related to food. To analyse food culture in English-speaking countries while practicing reading and comprehension skills. Activity 1 Intorduction: English Language Menu
Opis aktivnosti
Students brainstorm interactive activities they would like to include into the ELD event in school. The activities have to be connected with food vocabulary with special stress on British and American English. Students agree on 6 activities they are going to prepare for EDL event. Students are divided into groups. Each group does two activity.

Activity 2 American or British? Guess!
Opis aktivnosti
Students prepare a list of food-related terms from English-speaking countries (e.g., "biscuits" in the UK vs. "cookies" in the US, "aubergine" in the UK vs. "eggplant" in the US). They have participants match the British and American terms, learning the differences in food vocabulary. Students design cards with images with the vocabulary under, both American and British without saying which word is American and which British.

Activity 3 Blind Food Dictation
Opis aktivnosti
Students prepare instructions for blind dictations with food vocabulary (American and British vocabulary) - they write 4 instructions, 2 with British and 2 with American foods (e.g. . only British foods. Draw a table/chair in the middle of the paper. There is a zucchini under the table. There are scones in the right corner of the paper.... Students draw with their eyes blindfolded. They can only draw the words which are American/British. The winners are the ones who draw only the American/British food in the right position.

Activity 4 American or British? Sort out the dishes!
Opis aktivnosti
Students research and design cards with traditional dishes from English-speaking countries (e.g., fish and chips from the UK, clam chowder from the US). Cards are used in a game where students sort out the cards according to their origin.

Activity 5 Guess the Dish Quiz
Opis aktivnosti
Students create a quiz with clues about dishes from English-speaking countries (e.g., "This is a savory pie with mashed potatoes on top, popular in the UK" = Shepherd’s Pie). Participants guess the dish based on the clues.

Activity 6 Food for Thought: Idiom Match!
Opis aktivnosti
Students create a matching game, they design memory cards using the idiom and the meaning. Participants play memory game.

Activity 7 Feast Your Words: Idiom Fill!
Opis aktivnosti
Students design worksheets with sentences with idioms – where there are idioms you should put gaps (I was planning a surprise party, but John _______________ before I could tell anyone.). Each worksheet should have 5 sentences (A4 = 2 worksheets). Students create 10 worksheets mixing different idioms.

Participants name three new things they have learned from the activities.
